Day 6 – Messages of Love

It is quite normal to get caught up in the day-to-day routine of life, and we often rely on birthdays and other special occasions to express our love to our loved ones with gifts and ‘grander than ordinary’ life gestures. And these special occasion moments are always lovely and filled with fun. They allow us to create concrete memories and the preparation of them ignites our imaginative giving self. But how about choosing a normal random day to share a few simple gestures of love that one would not normally do in a day?

For my ‘Something Different’ today I decided to leave small ‘love letters’ all over the house for my husband and son. If my daughter were still at home, or my mother living with us I would have done the same for them. But since I live with my son and husband, I decided to dedicate this physical gesture to them.

I cut pieces of paper into various shapes and wrote loving messages onto them. Like for instance: I cut a heart out of paper, wrote a message, and stuck it to the steering wheel of my husband’s car, so that when he next got into it, he would find the letter. I also cut a piece of paper into a long skinny strip, wrote a message of love to my son (telling him how proud I am of him) and wound it between the keys of his computer’s keypad, so that he would find it when next on his computer… which did not take long at all with him loving video games! I placed another note in my sons’ shoes, in my husbands’ reading book, cut flowers and placed them next to my husbands’ side of the bed and wrote them both a message on the bathroom mirror with my lipliner pencil. You can see some of the things I did for this exercise on the video I made.

It was a fun and an uplifting thing to do. As I wrote and planted one message… more and more ideas came to mind. I could have filled the house with messages if I had had the time. I think the last one I did was unrolling a bit of a toilet roll and drawing red hearts onto about 10 squares, then rolling it back and placing it into its rightful spot in the house… just a little fun! As I was going with this exercise, I had a giggle at the cheesiness of it, but loved knowing that I was dedicating time to doing something different and focusing that moment in time today on the people I love. Later throughout the day when I heard and saw my son and husband find the notes, my heart filled further. I had given them some joy… and there is no better feeling than giving from the heart!

So, there you go – that was my ‘Something Different’ for today and I would highly recommend trying it out if you wish to. It was certainly a feel-good thing to do today!
